Federal Funding for Land Trusts

Federal funding Available for land trusts

In 2023, Keep It Colorado received a grant from the Walton Family Foundation to support the development of a clearinghouse of federal funding opportunities for water-focused land conservation projects in the Colorado River Basin (CRB). Through this effort, information on more than 70 federal programs available to land trusts was compiled.

Rather than creating a standalone tool, Keep It Colorado contributed this research to an existing national resource: WALT: Wildlife and Land Trusts.

WALT is a free, online, interactive tool that helps land trusts identify the right federal assistance programs for their unique wildlife conservation needs. Developed by Defenders of Wildlife in partnership with the Land Trust Alliance, WALT takes the guesswork out of navigating complex federal programs.

As stewards of more than 61 million acres across the country, land trusts are well-positioned to lead efforts to address the biodiversity crisis — and WALT helps ensure they have access to the funding needed to do so.
